Things To Do
Grand Turk may be small in size, but it offers a perfect balance of laid-back island charm and just enough adventure to keep things interesting. For those who appreciate the natural world, it’s truly a haven—especially for bird and wildlife enthusiasts.
The island is home to over 170 species of birds, with several commonly spotted around the historic salinas and ponds—remnants of Grand Turk’s once-thriving salt industry. These wetlands now serve as important habitats, attracting a variety of birdlife year-round.
Adding to the island’s unique character are its friendly free-roaming animals. Donkeys, a lasting symbol of the salt trade era, wander the streets in search of attention (and the occasional cardboard box to nibble on). You’ll also encounter local “potcakes”—the island’s beloved mixed-breed dogs—known for their gentle nature and tendency to adopt visitors as temporary best friends. From time to time, you may even be greeted by curious horses or cows, completing the authentic and unhurried charm that makes Grand Turk so special.
Snorkeling and Diving
Snorkelling and diving are among the top activities for visitors to Grand Turk. The island is home to exceptional reefs, both shallow and deep, teeming with marine life. For those not yet ready to scuba dive, snorkelling offers an easy and enjoyable introduction to the underwater world, using just a mask, snorkel, and fins.
With the reef wall beginning at approximately 25 feet and being just a few hundred yards from your room door, this makes Grand Turk, the ideal place for Scuba Diving. Divers can expect to encounter a wide variety of marine life, including groupers, barracuda, turtles, reef sharks, seahorses, stingrays and in season there’s always the possibility you may encounter Humpback Whales.
Whale Watching
Grand Turk is also the breeding ground of the Atlantic Humpback Whale. From mid January to mid April, these magnificent animals can often be seen travelling along “The Wall” just offshore, in front of the Salt Raker Inn and you may even be fortunate enough to witness surface activity such as breaching. Several local operators offer charters, providing the opportunity to observe them up close, with in-water encounters sometimes possible depending on sea conditions and whale behaviour. Please ask our team about whale watching opportunities during your stay.
Fishing
Grand Turk offers a variety of fishing experiences, with three main types available to visitors:
1. Deep sea fishing takes place offshore in deep waters. Charters typically use trolling techniques, with multiple baited lines or lures drawn behind the boat to target fast-moving pelagic species. Depending on the season, catches may include tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi. This style of fishing covers larger areas of open water and offers an exciting opportunity to hook powerful game fish in a true offshore setting.
2. Bottom Fishing typically conducted near reefs or underwater structures, the boat is positioned or anchored while guests drop baited lines to target species such as grouper, snapper, and triggerfish.
3. Bone Fishing takes place in shallow waters, typically along the mangroves and flats, where anglers wade or fish from small boats while casting flies or bait designed to mimic natural prey. The aim is to entice a bonefish to strike; renowned for their speed and strength, they provide a challenging and exciting fight. Historically, bonefish were harvested in large numbers using gill nets. Today, this practice is largely discouraged, and bone fishing is primarily a catch-and-release sport. However, some traditional fishermen may still occasionally keep a small number for personal consumption.
With the island’s dramatic drop-off located just a few hundred yards from shore in many areas, Grand Turk offers exceptional access to both deep sea and bottom fishing grounds. Seasonal migratory species also pass through local waters, contributing to the fresh seafood featured in many island restaurants.
Guests can book fishing charters with experienced local operators, or our team will be happy to assist in arranging the right experience. Most charters allow you to keep your catch, and our onsite restaurant will gladly prepare it for you.
Bird Watching
With over 170 recorded species, birdlife can be observed throughout Grand Turk. The striking West Indian flamingo is commonly seen in several locations, particularly in areas where shrimp are abundant. Other species include black-necked stilts, American oystercatchers, kestrels, and a variety of ducks, among many others.
While there are no formal birdwatching tours on the island, the book Birds of the Turks & Caicos is a helpful resource for identifying species and locating habitats. Our team will also be happy to point you in the right direction to areas where larger congregations of birds are often found.
Incredible Beaches
Grand Turk is home to a variety of easily accessible beaches, each offering clear turquoise water, soft white sand, and a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere.
Salt Raker Inn Beach is of course our favourite beach as it’s just steps from your Room.
Governor’s Beach is one of the island’s most popular and photographed beaches. It offers calm, clear water and excellent swimming conditions.
Cockburn Town Beach runs along the historic capital and provides a unique combination of beachfront access and local culture. Visitors can enjoy views of traditional Bermudian-style architecture and nearby restaurants serving local dishes.
English Point offers a quieter rocky setting, ideal for those looking to enjoy a more secluded beach experience. Its location away from the main town means fewer crowds.
Pillory Beach, on the west coast, is known for its proximity to the reef. Snorkelers can access marine life just offshore, often within a short swim from the beach.
The East Side beaches are more exposed to the Atlantic, and tend to be carpeted by sea grass (look out for turtles) and unfortunately sargassum and flotsam. These beaches are great for walking and enjoying a more rugged coastal landscape. You can see the island of Gibbs Cay from here.
In the Turks and Caicos Islands, all beaches up to the high-water mark are public, ensuring open access to the coastline for both residents and visitors.
